In 1723 Hale Unitarian Chapel situated in Chapel Lane, Hale Barns was built. Silas Sidebottom, the minister at Hale (1723 - 1747) purchased land in the village and built the schoolhouse in 1740. He then handed it over to the Trustees of the Chapel.
It was the only day school in the district for 150 years. A Sunday School was opened on Sunday 3rd February 1788 at first using the day school premises. A larger schoolroom was built adjacent to this schoolhouse in 1880 and was extended in 1886. Further extensions were added to the entrance in 1910.
During the last 100 years, the Chapel and its school became a focal point in village life offering a wide range of social and educational facilities:
- A Penny Bank
- Library
- Sunday School
- Band of Hope
- Singing Classes
- Youth Club
The present Trustees would like to continue this tradition of providing facilities to enhance village life and welcome everyone to this historic venue
